The New Insider Threat: AI Misuse by Well-Meaning Staff

Artificial Intelligence is transforming the workplace—but it’s also quietly becoming one of the biggest cybersecurity blind spots for small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs). That contract could now be part of the model’s training data, accessible in some form to others. Or a developer might use Copilot to generate code using internal repository data, inadvertently leaking proprietary logic or credentials.

What SMB Leaders Should Do Now

AI is here to stay. But your cybersecurity practices need to evolve with it. Here’s where to start:

  1. Audit current AI usage across your organization.

  2. Implement an official AI usage policy.

  3. Train employees on what data is off-limits for AI tools.

  4. Deploy monitoring tools to detect AI-related activity.

AI can be a powerful tool for growth—but only when used safely. As a business leader, it’s your responsibility to ensure that innovation doesn’t come at the cost of security.

Because the biggest threat to your data might not be a hacker. It might be your most productive employee—asking the wrong question to the wrong AI.
